Thank you for a richly-detailed but sad story, Chris. It reminds me of my experience in 8th grade in Encinitas, California when my alcoholic father was tasked with buying me new shoes while my mom was at work. He found an inexpensive pair of slippers for me at a shoe store in Oceanside so he could spend the remainder on alcohol. I was the only kid wearing such inexpensive slippers in 1964.
